          Your 2017 Laptop Guide:

The Top 3 Things to Think About when Choosing a New Laptop

You’ve probably already considered things like brand and budget as you approach your decision to purchase a new laptop. Most people start out with that basic knowledge. They know that some brands are better than others – surely they’ve received input from their friends and family and neighbors and tailors and hairdressers about which brand is best. But, many of them don’t know what they actually NEED when it comes to a new laptop computer.

Let’s look over the five most important (and usually most confusing) things you need to consider when purchasing a new laptop and reading reviews:

            • MAC, Windows, or Chrome? Familiarity is key. If there you are most compfortable and familiar with one of these options already, stick with it. There is no sense changing things now and confusing yourself. That being said, if your needs have changed it may be necessary to change the operating system you use. As a basic rule, most developers and designers prefer a MAC, most business people and academic students prefer Windows, and Chrome is best for people who just want to casually browse the internet.
            • What the Heck is a CPU Processor? When it comes to buying a new computer (of any type) words like “processor,” “Intel Core,” and conglomerations of letters like GHz can be all it takes to boggle a lot of our minds. To put things as simply as possible, your computer is run by its processor. Like the brain in a human body, the processor is the main certer of control. The stronger the brain, the more powerful the computer. A processor can have 1 core or more. Essentially, having more cores is like having more brains. Two heads are better than one right? Unfortunately, the number of cores in a processor is not directly related to the number in its name (an Intel i5 does not have 5 cores). Still, higher numbers are always better because they indicate newer and more powerful processors.
            • How much RAM do you really need? When we talk about RAM we talk in GBs, but we aren’t talking about storage capacity. We are talking about working memory. Storage GB in a computer is like your long-term memory – it holds information you aren’t using but you can access it whenever you need to. RAM (or Random Access Memory) is like your short-term memory – the part of your brain you use to consider things, to think, to accomplish tasks. The higher the GB of RAM, the better the short-term memory. People with great short-term memories are excellent multi-taskers, whereas people with poor short-term memories can only do one thing at a time. The same is true for your computer’s RAM. This means that if you need to do more than one thing at a time, have multiple windows open, or perform compex tasks with your computer you want something with a high level of RAM. Typically, 6 to 8 GB of ram is sufficient for your everyday needs. If you are a gamer, though, you’ll want something with about 16 GB of RAM.

Now that you know what you need all that is left to consider are the extras! You can start thinking about things like touchscreens, detachable screens, backlit keyboards and more.
